Exploring the material realities behind pigment, stone, and glass, the session followed the installation of our Stone Space Frame as part of the ongoing exhibition With Every Fiber.

The panel brought together different perspectives, from Nina Cooke John’s work in glass to John Sabraw’s use of pigments derived from mine runoff. Steve’s contribution focused on stone, including our work with The Stonemasonry Company, which looks at how post-tensioned stone can achieve the structural performance of more carbon-intensive materials.

A key thread through the session was the idea of ethical decarbonisation. Carbon is only one part of the story. Reducing embodied carbon also needs to sit alongside reducing harm in how materials are sourced, processed, and transported. This opened up wider questions around the human impact embedded within material supply chains, from extraction through to procurement.

It’s been exciting bringing these conversations to an international stage. Events like this broaden the conversation around ethical design.

Thanks to Grace Farms for inviting us to contribute, and Chelsea Thatcher for moderating the session.
