Spanning across two floors, the house features a dramatic open-plan living area on the ground floor, with a sweeping spiral staircase leading to a first-floor gallery and bedrooms. A detached 100m² garage complements the main building.
Our team provided multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy for the design. The structural scheme includes innovative tree-like cross-laminated timber columns that form the structural backbone of the house. Set out in a grid inspired by the spacing of osier plants, these engineered timber columns support the building’s predominantly glazed façade. This solution provides strength and stability while creating an open, flowing space that enhances the connection between the house and its landscape.
Sustainability was a key focus throughout the project. We developed the engineering solutions to support a biomass heating system, which will be fuelled by willow grown on-site, helping to reduce the building’s carbon footprint. We also played a role in integrating drainage and groundworks to support the site’s ambitious biodiversity goals.
The new home received the green light from West Lancashire Borough Council though Paragraph 84 of the National Planning Policy Framework, which allows for the construction of isolated dwellings within the countryside where the design is truly exceptional and reflects the highest standards in architecture.
