First opened in 1829, the site currently spans across 15 acres and contains more than 7,000 plants and four listed glasshouses. Known as the ‘Growing Our Green Heritage Project’, the scheme is funded by then National Lottery Heritage Fund Grant.
Working with Howells and Donald Insall Associates, we are providing structural and civil engineering. The porposals aim to protect and reveal the historic assets while increasing visitor experience and accessibility, as well as enhancing fabric performance — safeguarding the gardens for future generations. The project will provide a low-carbon, sympathetic reinterpretation of the existing gardens and structures through partial demolition, refurbishment, and reconfiguration, including the creation of a new external courtyard.
