Situated just a stone’s throw from St Paul’s Cathedral at 11 Pilgrim Street, The Carter was an unassuming building earmarked for redevelopment by the client, who wanted to make the space attractive, inclusive, and accessible to a broad range of potential occupiers.
The refurbishment comprised the complete remodelling of the ground floor reception and entrance, the infill of an existing atrium to accommodate an extension on the seventh floor, new terraces on upper floors, and new lifts, WCs, and shower facilities across the building.
Our structural design re-uses as much of the existing structure as possible. The new rooftop extension employs an exposed steel frame with engineered timber infill joists and panels, limiting the weight applied to the existing structure and avoiding any strengthening works. Exposed timber in the roof acts as both a structural element and a natural finish, reducing material use. Between floors two and nine, reclaimed raised access floor tiles were installed in place of new.
The building now offers an inclusive and adaptable workspace that maximises lettable floor area for the client and pushes towards the UK’s Net Zero 2050 ambitions.
