Based on the principal of a stone cantilever stair, the treads of this helical stair, built within a Georgian building in Earls Court were formed with built up laminated of plywood. Each tread consists of 10 layers of ash "Tri-ply" which form a continuously fanned, twisted deck of cards like soffit, but were cut to form tread and risers above. Each tread is screwed to a laminated structural balustrade which was 36mm thick and vacuum pressed into shape.

The clients brief was to avoid damage to the existing curved lime plastered wall and so generally there is no connection to the wall behind except for two small stainless steel pins one third and two thirds of the way up the flight.
