Based on the principal of a stone cantilever staircase, the treads of the stair were created with built up layers of laminated plywood. Each tread consists of 10 layers of the try-ply, which form a continuously fanned and twisted soffit, but were cut to form tread and risers above. Each tread is screwed to a laminated structural balustrade which was 36mm thick and vacuum pressed into shape.
The client’s brief was to avoid damage to the existing curved lime plastered wall and so there is only minimal connection to the wall behind with two small stainless steel pins one thirds and two thirds of the way up the flight.
