Originally used as a vehicle screening area during the 2012 Games, the playing fields had been entirely tarmacked over. Post-Olympics, the site was handed to the London Legacy Development Corporation, with an initial remit to return it to its pre-Games condition. But thanks to Waltham Forest’s backing, the brief expanded into a full-scale redevelopment of the park, focused on creating new outdoor sports and play spaces for year-round public use.

Civil works involved substantial site remediation, including the removal of compacted asphalt layers and reinstatement of the underlying ground to suit recreational and structural uses. New below-ground drainage, hard and soft landscaping, and sub-base systems were coordinated to support a synthetic turf pitch, natural grass pitch, and a range of water features and play installations. Existing made ground and groundwater levels informed our approach to subgrade treatments and soakaway design. Structural interventions included retaining structures, concrete plinths and stair units, steel-framed signage, and the cast in-situ bases for the bespoke wave edging and handrail systems.

The new park provides long-term civic value with robust new surfaces and structural interventions built to last.
