A key decision in this exemplar refurbishment project was to strip back the fabric clutter that it had accumulated over the 150+ years of its existence to expose the raw elements.
On the upper floors, storage in the loft was converted into a mezzanine for additional floor space. The fit-out replaced windows and doors, cemented pavement light, and opened the southern facade back to the adjacent courtyard. For the office space on the lower floors, the basement slab was lowered, and large double height openings were introduced. Much of the ground floor was removed and replaced with a glazed meeting room. Steel was employed for the new internal elements.
The brief demanded a high level of intricate detailing, resulting in hundreds of options proposed and reviewed for every element. With the structure largely exposed, the results of this effort are clear.
