The piece was first created for the Royal Academy’s 2024 Summer Exhibition. It studies how post-tensioned stone can be used to form lightweight, stable structures more often associated with steel. By putting stone into tension rather than relying on its compressive strength, the frame challenges how we use one of the oldest construction materials and shows how it can contribute to lower-carbon forms.

The exhibition brings together designers and makers from around the world to examine responsible approaches to materials in the built environment.
