The project combines new construction with the refurbishment of existing buildings to create a new dining hall and pastoral hub for an independent day school in Borehamwood. The spaces will be welcoming, modern environments that support student wellbeing.
As structural and civil engineers, we supported the architects in creating an efficient and sustainable design that balances aesthetics with functionality. A standout feature of the project is the striking dining hall roof, a low-carbon timber structure formed of trussed glulam beams and a CLT slab. Spanning 16m, this triple-pitched design required careful structural coordination to achieve both its architectural intent and practical performance.
The site presented significant civil engineering challenges, particularly in developing the SuDS strategy that could manage surface water effectively within a constrained footprint. Our design incorporated permeable surfaces and natural drainage solutions, working in harmony with the new landscaped quad to enhance biodiversity.
The new resilient, high-quality environments will serve the school community for years to come.
We’re excited to work with the team and watch the project come to life.
