Today we chat to Sadiyah Begum, who is working with us through an apprenticeship scheme as Document Controller, about her studies and working life, her love for reading and the best thing about working in engineering.

How are you finding doing an apprenticeship during Covid?

It’s been interesting working from home, I've been able to use this experience and incorporate it into assignments for my apprenticeship and learn new skills about how to work from home.

What is the best thing about working in engineering?

The best thing about working in engineering is looking through different projects and seeing the end result.

What are you studying and what made you choose this career?

I'm currently doing an apprenticeship in Business Administration (Level 4) at K10 Apprenticeships Limited. I’ve chosen to do this as it enables me to study, learn, and work at the same time. Doing this apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to work as a Document Controller at Webb Yates Engineers, where I’m responsible for the timely, accurate and efficient preparation and management of documents. From the beginning, it was actually my sister who encouraged me to become a document controller, she has the same job and she enjoys her work, and now so do I!

What are your ambitions for the future?

Right now, I wish to pass my Business Administration course and continue to gain new skills and develop in my role as a Document Controller.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

My hobbies outside of work include reading, I’m currently fascinated in the horror and mystery genre. I like baking but I’m not good at it, I've attempted to bake bread four times and failed four times, but I can make a decent cake.

Where is your favourite country you would like to visit and why?

I’ve never been outside of the UK yet, but I would love to go to Okinawa Island in the East China Sea. It's a small, dreamy island surrounded by beautiful blue waters, white beaches, and colourful coral reefs. Also, it’s the place they went in karate kid and I love that movie.

What are your secret skills?

I can sew. I’m not very good because I’m still learning, but I can make basic clothing like dresses and tops. I’d say I’m alright at basic nail art, I had to calm down with it when I started my apprenticeship as it was too difficult to type with long nails.
